Micky Nelson
Micky Nelson’s parents left town on vacation and gave him warnings that he wasn’t to have parties at the house and that he had better make up his mind that he couldn’t use the car. Micky promised and his parents left, and at the bowling alley, Micky made me promise to come to his party that night.
When I got to the party, Micky was drunk and the place was full of people I knew, and they were lying on the carpet, drinking and making out. I worked my way across the lovers and drunks and found the kitchen and the whisky. At all the parties I've been to, there is a certain breed of animal who hides out in kitchen and drinks, and I am of that breed.
After a few hours, I was just as drunk as anybody else, and Micky decided it was time to take his father's car for a spin. We went to the garage and Micky pulled a knife out of nowhere and cut the top of the convertible and reached in and opened the door. He hot-wired the engine and backed through the garage door. The plastic door and debris were piled all over the car and the people from the party were gathered in the front lawn and they gave Micky a cheer. Me and Scrawny crawled into the car and Micky gave it gas and we squealed out of sight, headed for Okoboji. We poured more whisky into our bodies and when we got to Spirit Lake, the police stopped and arrested us. We were taken to jail and Micky saw his chance to escape and he sprinted up a flight of stairs onto the roof and jumped two stories. When the police found him he was hitch-hiking down Highway 71 using a golf club for a crutch. He had broken his leg.
