Forming ly Adverbs

 

1.  Usually, ly is just added to the adjective to form the adverb.

cold = coldly                warm = warmly        careful = carefully        rigorous = rigorously

2.  Adjectives ending in ic are made into adverb by adding ally.

tragic = tragically        magic = magically        frantic = frantically        dramatic = dramatically

3.  For adjectives that end in le following a consonant, change the last e to y.

terrible = terribly        simple = simply        adorable = adorably        crumble = crumbly

4.  For adjectives that end in le following a vowel, usually just add ly.

agile = agilely        sole = solely            Exception:          whole = wholly

5.  With adjectives ending  in ll, just add y.

chill = chilly        full = fully        

6.  With adjectives ending in ue, drop the e and add ly.  (There might be exceptions to this)

true = truly        

7.  For adjectives ending in y following a consonant, change the y it i and add ly.

sappy = sappily        crazy = crazily        lazy = lazily        ready = readily        Exception:          shy = shyly        sly = slyly  

8.  For adjectives ending in y following a vowel, just add ly.

coy = coyly                        Exception:          gay = gaily        day = daily
