The Yanks Who Wanted a Leader

The Yanks, who grieved at having no established Leader, sent ambassadors to the Electoral College begging for someone to preside over them.  Perceiving their simplicity, the College named a huge Log as leader.  The Yanks were pleased and told each other things would stabilize now.  But as soon as they realized that the huge Log was motionless, they  began treating it with contempt.  After some time they began to think themselves ill-treated in the appointment of so inert a Leader, and sent a second deputation to the Electoral College to plead with them to send another choice.  They were then sent an Eel to govern them.  When the Yanks discovered his easy good nature and slippery ways, they sent yet a third time to the Electoral College to beg them to choose for them still another Leader.  The College, displeased with all their complaints, finally sent them a thorny bush, who prevented the Yanks from going forward, rending their clothes and their skins, and causing great pain.

Let well enough alone.
